Is Jesus God?

Yes and No. The answer to that question depends on what your definition of “God” is. So many have a different definition of “God”. One thing is certain though, what almost all will agree on, is that God is a supreme being much greater than us all, and almost all will agree that no one has ever seen God.

There are basically two different views of what God is to most: The Creator of man, the Earth and the Cosmos; then there is the view that God (if you will) is the Source of all things.

Now God is the Creator of Man (and Jesus was a man), — a creation of God, according to the Bible (Gen 1:27). So it is impossible that the creation could be the Creator — that’s just logical. Of course, Paul’s gospels say that Jesus was God come in the flesh of a man.

There are so many problems with this theory that it just wouldn’t be possible in this writing to address all the issues this theory creates. This theory is one very frequently used in the Gospel of John to try and prove that Jesus is God: “I and my Father are one” (Jn 10:30). This doctrine states that Jesus is not only God come in the flesh, but also the creator of the entire universe.

Then there is the view that God is the Source of all things. According to this, there is nothing that exists without God. Therefore, Jesus would be a part of God as is his whole creation. Without this source nothing would even be in existence.

Jesus was not declaring by this that he was entirely God or he wouldn’t have prayed this to God:

“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”

“And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:” (John 17:21. 22)

…but that all came from the Source (in the Father) and will eventually return and be one with him.

We are all a part of the Source, “the Father”, and he is greater than all:

“My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” (Jn 10:29)

“…I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.” (Jn 14:28)

These passages sum up both sides of the question perfectly:

  • That Jesus was not declaring that he was entirely God and;
  • That he was a part of God as we all are a part of God and;
  • That though we are all a part of the Source, it is greater than all.

The most accurate answer to the question, “Is Jesus God” is: he is a part of God as is all of us are a part. And one day all of us will be “one in the Father” as Jesus is and as he has also said.
