Believe On or Believe In?
What is the difference between Everlasting Life and Salvation? Or is there a difference? Why are these terms different for the same concept? Or are they the same? I guess to most people, they could care less. However, if they have the same meaning then there is a great contradiction here.
If they are different, then there is something here that we haven’t seen before. It’s not a wonder most people don’t study and try to understand the bible for themselves, it takes a bible scholar with a doctorate degree to understand some of it. So people just leave the interpreting to the guys with the credentials and accept what they have to say as God-sent truth.
According to Jesus, Everlasting Life is obtained by keeping the commandments and doing good works. According to Paul, salvation is merely believing and one cannot be saved by good works which we have done, but belief only is “accounted” for righteousness. Apparently, salvation is being saved from Hell. The concept of Hell is foreign to the Bible. Maybe this is the reason Jesus preferred to use the term eternal life.
This is a direct contradiction of a basic concept. To make things more complicated, Jesus says in one of the gospels, “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” So in this place it seems that Jesus is agreeing with Paul in that all you have to do is believe. Weather or not he actually said those exact words is a different story.
But then in other places he says clearly that you have to keep his commandments and do good works to enter into life. What is one to believe? It’s not a wonder that people leave it up to the clergy to get their truth.

The Great Hypothesis
Answer These Three Simple Questions:
- Would you stake your “eternal salvation” on a hypothesis?
- Would you risk “losing you soul” over something you’re not sure of?
- Supposing you live only one life, without a second chance, would you risk your “eternity” based on your beliefs?
Belief is required to be deceived.
Believing something that is untrue is the same as being deceived. It’s alright to believe, but how do you know for sure what you believe is true? Knowing this then, doesn’t it seem dangerous to base your “eternal” destiny on belief?
p>So you see, righteousness is required to enter the kingdom of heaven — according to Jesus. The scribes and Pharisees do get into the kingdom of heaven. But eventually, because of their unrighteousness, they even take longer to get in than the publicans and the harlots. Here Jesus alludes to Reincarnation since some enter the kingdom of heaven before others.

What is Salvation All About?
A kind of Salvation different than what they expected
Jesus used the expression “everlasting life” more than he used “salvation” since it more accurately portrayed the reality of what he taught. The Jews lived in a time when they were under the oppression of the Romans and they were expecting a long awaited messiah that their scriptures prophesied would come who would deliver them out the the hands of their enemies.
However, though Jesus appeared to be that king and messiah that they were awaiting for God to send them, he didn’t come to bring them quite the type of “deliverance” that they had expected. He wasn’t exactly the kind of king most expected him to be. Unless of course, Jesus actually started a flame that ignited a war that was not recorded in the New Testament, like a lot of original passages that are missing from the Bible. There was the Jewish-Roman War (66-73 CE) that destroyed Jerusalem. But I digress…
Jesus came to bring them the message of salvation rather than deliverance from their enemies. He came to teach them the way to obtain “everlasting life”. This is the kind of salvation that would be “lasting unto the age of the ages” as the expression is literally translated.
But the enemy Jesus came to deliver them from was not Rome, as we see from the history that was left to us. Jesus said that his kingdom wasn’t from this world. The real enemy Jesus came to deliver them from was the god of this world and their own sinful selves — and I might add the bondage to a law that was not written by God, but traditions of men.
